You Am I - 'Dilettantes'

Exclusive: We've got the first single from that previously mentioned forthcoming You Am I record Dilettantes, titled er...'Dilettantes'.

Announcing itself slowly with some sunnny backwards effects, followed by clean strumming and cymbal washes, the largely acoustic track delivers on that promise from Davey Lane that "The soundscape is a lot wider this time. More instruments, more overlays, a less rock, more creative approach."

At the songs close we even hear some mournful wind organ/violin swells, high pitched singing and timpani, before it drops away to leave the swells on their lonesome. But not before the odd - *gasp* - bubbling computer effect. It's more reflective than Convicts certainly; more akin to the downcast tunes of Hourly Daily. It's more Sunset Studies than Sandinista.

If I could never see you in the light
What chance have I of finding you in shadows
I'll take the notes, I know that it's alright
I'll meet you someday out there in the shadows

After the warts and all of Convicts it sounds like a declaration of change from the four piece. Which should please the historians. And what's more, Rogers sounds like he's got some pipes left yet. This bodes well.

Dilettantes is due out in September.
