Things Melbourne loves: vintage fashion + bikes. Things that Melbourne's first tweed ride hosted by the
Bicycle Film Festival gives you the opportunity to indulge: vintage fashion + bikes.
Tweed rides have taken off in London, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington and the
Sydney tweed ride in June went down a treat. Fortunately for the Melburnians, it falls right at the end of Movember, when the terribly chapish mos will be at their peak.
The dress code is vintage. Lads, may we suggest a pair of plus fours, long socks, and crisp shirt and waiscoat with tie - you may need to remove your jacket or cardigan, and a waistcoat will keep you modest. Ladies, may we recommend long socks again, under a modest mid-calf-length skirt. Lipstick will not go astray, neither will a sturdy pair of pedalling shoes in place of your usual heels.
Chappish dapper things you can shout whilst tweed riding:
I say, good chap, I shan't be a minute
My mechanical horse cannot go faster, do go around
Pardon me, you have rather cut me off there
I rather fancy the bounce in your basket, young miss
Melbourne's first ever tweed ride takes place
Sunday 29 November. Meet at the
State Library steps at 12 noon, ride the scenic route around Melbourne, pop into the bike polo at Flagstaff Gardens, then finish at the B.est F.riends F.orever Street Party in Collingwood.
All road rules apply, so your challenge will be how to make your helmet work with your outfit.
