Children Collide - 'Social Currency'

Children Collide have been playing round the traps for years now. They picked up decent management and booking along the way, which has seen them ascend quickly to playing the Big Day Out, shows in the US and the UK and enjoying high-rotation all over the radio, simply on the back of a couple of EPs and their first "semi-hit" single 'We Are Amphibious'. The only thing really missing from the picture is bags of money. Enter Universal Music.
The grunge aficionados have signed with a major and so spent the last couple of months recording their debut album in LA with producer de rigeur, Dave Sardy. Indeed, he of Jet, Wolfmother and Oasis fame.
So it's no wonder that first single 'Social Currency' from the album sounds ready to shift some units. It's crisp, crackling with energy and has all the clipping and sonics that radio loves. The question mark that hung over the band over the last few years was whether their brand of 90s rock would stay relevant until they actually released something. Fortunately for them a Grunge revival feels on the horizon. And anyway, they combat this by infusing the verses with hints of new wave (but blessedly free of synths) while switching back into old-school pub rock for the chorus. Gang of Four meets Grinspoon maybe? (In fact they're on tour with the Lismore band at the moment.) It's visceral sure but...hopefully they run with those hints of the former because no one needs more of the latter.
