Midnight Juggernauts - 'This New Technology'
It's always interesting seeing which way an artist goes after a successful breakthrough. Churn out more of the same or use their elevated platform to stretch their limbs. More often than not the result separates the true 'artists' from the 'tourists' and wannabes; draws a line in the sand, as if to say 'We're good enough for this'. And if the creative change of tack is pulled off, the band gets to enjoy a critical slathering as well as that of their fanbase. There's a reason people refer to it as 'doing a
Kid A'.
Midnight Juggernauts haven't exactly stretched themselves thin on the first offering from their forthcoming follow up to ARIA # 1
Dystopia. But there is a distinct shift on 'This New Technology'. Acoustic guitars,
actual drums and a weird, morose bed of keyboards that are less star-reaching synth washes, and more true organ sounds which lend a more classic bedrock to their generally oddball vocals. Again, I'd be surprised if lead Jugg Vincent could keep a straight face while singing here. I don't want to know if he's serious or not; it's so much more fun to believe that he's not. And anyone idiotically brave enough to slot 'G-L-O-R-I-A' into a hit single gets a free pass for a while I say.
