The Living End
White Noise
(Dew Process/Universal)
The contention that Melbourne's the Living End have never been able
to convey the energy and power of their live shows on record has
been repeated so many times, the band themselves appear to believe
it. Plus, album sales have never approached their five-time
platinum debut.
So for album number five there's a new label and
new disposition. White Noise begins with one of Chris Cheney's best
guitar riffs yet, and 'How Do We Know' is a searing opener. 'Loaded
Gun' balances pop culture and politics over grinding bass.
Band
insiders insist Cheney's lyrics and vocals have never been
stronger. Vocally he sounds terrific. The unusual choice of
producer John Agnello (the Hold Steady) provides an adjustment in
sound that will not be too uncomfortable for fans. There are a few
curveballs. The retro arrangement of 'Kid' surprises, as does its
emotional punch. 'Moment In The Sun' speaks to the band's break-up
and make-up.
Ten years on from their debut, Cheney is still finding
his voice as a lyricist. His recent albums have succeeded only in
satisfying a fervent fanbase. Treading water was suddenly a real
threat. White Noise, though, is fresh, diverse and relatively
honest, and TLE suddenly got a lot more interesting.
