MGMT return with a fan-shedding first single from their forthcoming second album
Congratulations.
MGMT - 'Flash Delirium'
MGMT have made no bones about changing up their sound on the much anticipated follow-up to debut
Oracular Spectacular. Said singer Andrew VanWyngaarden
back in December:
For people that just know our singles, it’s going to be a big change. For people who get into some of the other tracks on the first album that were more psychedelic and classic-rock-influenced, they’ll be happy. It’s a pretty natural progression. But a lot of people think of us as an electro duo, and it’s not like that at all. It’s really catchy and really honest and heartfelt in a good way. We dropped some of the irony that you can find in our earlier songs.
Today comes the first official taste of their second LP
Congratulations, in 'Flash Delirium', a schizo pop song seemingly built from sections rather than a unified whole. Not an unusual approach from the duo, who once said that for many songs on their debut they were aiming to avoid repetition altogether. Recorded by Spaceman 3 Pete Kember and again mixed by Dave Friddman, the track isn't as sonically "interesting" to me straight off the bat (and I'm a
vehement fan of Oracular Spectacular) but it's enjoyable to see the band flip off most everyone expecting another 'Kids'. These things take time. Kudos.
Congratulations is out April 13th. You can download 'Flash Delirium' right now at

And in tacky gimmick news, a deluxe version of
Congratulations will come with a scratch off cover:
