Winona Ryder stars as a creepy mannequin in the brand new Tim Burton-directed Killers video
Horror magnate and recurring-Killers collaborator Tim Burton has teamed up with the Mr Bightside creators again (last time was for the 2006 Sam’s Town hit “Bones”) producing a macabre, slightly supernatural and altogether disconcerting clip for the band’s latest Battle Born ballad, “Here With Me”.
Enlisting rising British star Craig Roberts as the video’s mentally-degenerating protagonist and a purposefully glassy-eyed Winona Ryder as the steals-the-show supporting actress, the song’s story chronicles a – for lack of a better word – creep falling in love with a wax mannequin he quite literally picks up from a theatrette.
Adapting his usual black-and-white-stripes expressionist style, Burton’s roulettes, coiled tunnels and incongruously placed objects make for some seriously compelling watching, as “Here With Me”’s account of infatuation and obsession climaxes as Roberts and the mannequin turn into ostensible human candles – both souls and wicks kindred – as they sit down for a darkly-lit dinner.
Of the video, Burton said, “When I heard the song “Here With Me”, I remembered seeing a wax figure of Winona (Ryder) in Louis Tussaud's Waxworks in Blackpool. The concept of the video is inspired by the 1935 film 'Mad Love', starring Peter Lorre, as well as the works of Mario Bava.”
For me, the weirdness of the clip felt slightly inconsistent next to the predictably lovelorn-sonics, but the almost-90s stylisation (it’s just a little too HD – and, of course, we watched it on YouTube) is enjoyable, aptly conjuring a more innocent time before Angelina stole Winona’s funk. Enjoy...
