The Taste of Music - Kirin J Callinan

Each week for the next few weeks, we're asking a different music personality to craft us a playlist based around the theme of "pop" or "rock". A theme so good you could taste it. And that taste might taste something a lot like a Drumstick ice-cream. I mean, I just pulled that out of thin air, but just to give you one example we could think of.

Today's candidate is Sydney based solo artist, the inscrutable Kirin J Callinan. It's hard to surmise Kirin's music beyond the below (ARIA Award-winning!) clip. His album's due in 2013:

Previously on the Taste the Music series: The Jezabels. Something For Kate. Muscles. Spod. Seekae.

Scritti Politti - 'Absolute'

I recently opened up my heart to someone. I'm a bit smitten. So I made her a mix tape. This track opened it.

--

Holly Herndon - 'Movement'

Hyper modern, original, beautiful & inspiring. Love it.

Nicki Rose - 'Electric Warrior'

So the story goes - "Sometime in the mid 1990's, a mysterious videotape appeared at various record labels across the United States. The video contained a "demo" of original compositions by a young man named Nicki Rose, who wanted more than anything to be a rock star. Nicki's stardom never came, but the tape slowly began to spread amongst the underground community across the country. Love him or hate him, one cannot deny the originality & singular vision of Nicki's music. He is indeed one of a kind. Rock on Nicki."

Pet Shop Boys - 'West End Girls'

Gathered around the TV late one night last week, a small group of friends enjoyed a youtube party. Somebody put this on, everybody shut up & listened, nobody said a word. I even shed a tear, though I often do. Top tune. See also: the vids for "Always on my mind" - Top of The Pops '87 (to check out the Emulator II) and "Suburbia" (a salute to Ash Moss).

Style Council - 'Shout to the Top'

Was sent to me some years ago boy somebody who thought that I look like Paul Weller in this video. Turns out I do.

--

Client Liason - 'End of the Earth'

For me, this was the best oz clip o the year. Evocative, fun, complimentary to the tune, and of it's time & place. For lovers of John Farnham, Donny Benet & other good music. Australia, get outta the house n go see them live.

The Radiators - 'Room Full o Diamonds'

In their day, The Radiators were kings amongst blokes. These days, they are an underrated Aussie classic, like KB Lager or Elliot Goblet. Come on ARIA... Hall o Fame 'em!

Superstar & Star - 'I Want Your Love'

I been following this guy for sometime now, and am a true believer & champion of his work. Though it seems it's not for everybody. I certainly choose to believe him to have the gift of genius, whether he is self aware or not. It doesn't matter. This is beyond warped. A word of warning - He has / has had countless songs & videos uploaded onto youtube, some of which are now taken down, but all of which add to his rich body of work. And it is VERY rich. View in moderation. There's a fantastic two part interview, with his home phone number & email included below. He wants you to call him.  Other favourites include "You Will Pay Some Day", "Rolling Go", "Mother & Father on their knees in Prayer".

Gatekeeper - 'EXO'

Earlier this year, progressive Chicago / NY technomaniacs released a record with an accompanying video game. Here's a video of a German guy playing it.

--

Wir - 'So and Slow It Grows'

In 1991, legendary 4 piece post punk band WIRE released a record called without their drummer Robert Gotobed. It was released under the band moniker "WIR". That's cool.

--

Sisters of Mercy - 'Dominiion'

It just doesn't get more epic than this.

--

Martika - 'Love Thy Will be Done'

Bliss. Absolute bliss.
