Wally de Backer's
other band The Basics are back with a tune that seems to be moulding them towards the former's niche.
Melbourne retro pop ensemble The Basics have famously had short shrift in their lifetime. After their drummer Wally de Backer began to seep into the public consciousness under the name of Gotye (you might know him), the three piece seemed poised to follow suit. They didn't. As Gotye rose to become one of the most feted musicians in the country, The Basics battled to be heard above the din of accolades for their drummer. Then, to rub salt into the wounds, proteges Little Red went on to earn high rotation and (over?)play every festival under the sun.
The bands grumblings escalated to the point that The Basics bassist Kris Schroeder openly complained in a 2007 interview with Brisbane's RAVE Magazine about Triple J - and in particular Richard Kingsmill - ignoring them. (An interview which curiously is
no longer accessible on the site, though you can read the
follow up with Wally still).
The point of all this? Now The Basics are back. To -
raaaargh - strip of the suits and present a new sound. Fans of the band might be a little thrown as to the new direction, Gotye fans will be delighted.
Behold, 'With This Ship'.
