Sydney's Annandale Hotel to close?

Sydney's Annandale Hotel to close?

Rumours are circulating that Sydney's Annandale Hotel will announce its closure today.

The storied rock venue is said to have held a "last drinks" party last night, following a performance by touring US musician Justin Townes Earle. After the set, Sydney musician Al Grigg (Red Riders, Palms, Straight Arrows) tweeted:

Annandale owners Matthew and Daniel Rule told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2009 that they'd been fighting Leichhardt Municipal Council for eight years over noise compliance, late trading and development applications to upgrade parts of the hotel. ''If we keep getting hit and continue to not get support from the council then this hotel in its form will be no longer,'' Matthew told the paper. ''For years we've been fighting and continually loaning money to defend ourselves. We just can't do it any more." The brothers took over the venue in 2000.

In 2011 the pair launched the controversial buy-a-brick scheme, which asked supporters to pitch in to assist in fighting the venues financial woes. The effort raised $50,000.

According to triple j the venue is expected to release a statement today.

UPDATE: The pub posted an update on their Facebook:

Dear Folks.

Just a quick note on what happened today. Matt and Dan meet with the bank today to discuss the position of the hotel. The bank are reviewing that now.

The hotel is not closed and our goal is to work with the bank to ensure that live music will continue through this period.

We will keep you updated ASAP.
