Powderfinger, one of the most successful Australian bands ever, are calling it a day.

The band held a press conference in Sydney this morning where they announced a farewell tour that will include dates with The Vines and Jet. From the band's website:

In what has been an agonising decision for the band, they have also announced that the “Sunsets” tour around the nation will be their last ever. Powderfinger will disband as a touring and recording band following this tour.

In a statement read out by Bernard, the band said that “With the completion of our last album, Golden Rule, we feel that we have said all that we want to say as a musical group. We firmly believe that it is our most complete and satisfying album and can't think of a better way to farewell our fans than with music that we all believe in and also with, hopefully, our best tour to date.”

The “Sunsets” tour will include shows in 21 different cities across every state and territory and be stretched over a seven week period from early September through to late October. Tickets will go on sale 9am Friday 30th April.

To add to the fun, the band will be supported by JET for all shows except the first three. The dates in Newcastle, Gold Coast and Brisbane will be supported by THE VINES.

And where will Powderfinger go out in a blaze of glory? Ballarat.
