Charles Haddon
(above, centre) - singer for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, who were due to play the Parklife Festival in Australia next month - has reportedly committed suicide.
According to Dutch website parool.nl (via
Contact Music), sometime after the band had finished their set at the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium, Haddon took his own life. He was 22:
He reportedly killed himself by climbing to the top of a satellite mast in a backstage parking area and jumping off.
The tragedy has been confirmed by festival organisers, who staged a press conference late on Friday (20Aug10).
Ou Est Le Swimming pool, currently on the airwaves in Australia with 'Dance The Way I Feel', were due to perform at the nationally touring Parklife Festival, beginning late September. In an
interview Hudson conducted with TheVine just last month, the singer confirmed that the band were looking forward to playing Australia for the first time: "We're going to make sure that everything on our side is absolutely perfect so everyone can enjoy it."
Footage of the band's last song at the Pukkelpop festival, shows the band leaving the stage, before Haddon returns to leap into the crowd. He then exits with security.
UPDATE:
mog.com are saying that Haddon's death may be linked to his stage-dive:
His act may have been connected to an incident that occured during his band's performance that afternoon, when a stage-dive by Haddon into the audience had allegedly seriously injured a girl.
A female audience member was reportedly taken away in an ambulance following the incident.
UPDATE 2: This comment was posted on the bands MySpace, following the incident, by user E:
I was there too at Pukkelpop. Very sad incident. During his performance I saw a very happy man, a cool artist... But just after his show he came back and jumped into the public (about 1 meter away from where I stood). But instead of getting on top of some people to crowd surf he hit the ground and a girl was injured seriously. I tought she had a broken
shoulder but I heared it was worse afterwards. I'm sure he didn't mean to hurt anyone! It was a stupid accident. It's not sure he killed himself for the same reason but I think it's possible. Anyway it is terrible that he is dead, whatever the reason may be... The look in his eyes when he stood up and they pulled the girl from the ground was very scary. But oh man... to kill himself... I still can't believe it. I was really in shock when I heared he killed himself. Such a shame! You were a great artist and you gave a very nice last show man. I enjoyed it very much along with everyone there. RIP mister Charles Haddon. My condolences to your friends and family... Keep on dancing the way you feel in heaven.
The televised performance which showed Haddon leaping into the crowd at sets end has now been removed from YouTube.
