Justin Timberlake releases new single

Justin Timberlake has finally returned to making music, earlier this afternoon releasing ‘Suit & Tie’, his first single in over three years. It’s now available on iTunes.

As you might expect from an artist who’s spent most of the last half decade on the sidelines of the music business, ‘Suit & Tie’ is a significant change-up from previous album, FutureSex/LoveSounds. The track is dominated by producer Timbaland’s jazzy horns, and JT’s throwback style pays its respects to the classical ground gained in recent years by newer neo soul artists such as Frank Ocean, BJ the Chicago Kid and Mayer Hawthorne.

As rumoured last week, the single features Jay-Z, Hov putting down the latest issue of Forbes long enough to check in a quick verse. It’s hardly inspired, but at least adds a bit of weight to Timbaland’s ultra-slick production.

This may be the sound of a maturing JT, who turns 32 at the end of the month. A lot of fans will probably balk on first listen, but give it some time to breathe. The track feels like it has legs.
