Once estranged bassist Jason Newstead performed with his old band Metallica over the weekend at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Awards. Meaning this time, you can hear the bass.

Newstead joined current bassist Robert Trujillo in performing on stage, swelling the bands ranks to a five piece and sharing vocal duties with his replacement. An emotional Newstead was also included in the opening speech. There were few signs of the infamous acrimony that led to Newstead's departure, except perhaps a hint during Trujillo's speech.

During his thanks, Truijillo gave praise to Metallica for "giving me the opportunity to contribute to this ongoing masterpiece that is Metallica". Newstead famously left the band after being frustrated by his own attempts to contribute creatively. As Trujillo made the comment, Newstead vigorously nodded his head in James Hetfield's face. Who for his part, pretended not to notice. You can see it here at four minutes in:

The band then performed 'Enter Sandman' and 'Master of Puppets'. And surprise, surprise...you can hear the bass.
