Chances are when Sally Seltmann a.k.a Melbourne's
New Buffalo penned the tune '1234' and gave it to her then tour mate Feist, she might have suspected it would sound pretty good on her record. Chances are she might not have suspected it making Feist a global household name; via her synchronised video for the song, its iPod Nano ad and now...its appearance on Sesame Street.
Feist performed the song on the ubiquitous kids show, changing the lyrics to "counting to four" and dancing about with the lucky number. Appearing alongside all manner of singing chickens, penguins and monsters. Hot.
It's hard to fathom the lasting impact this simple song has made. According to
Wikipedia, after the track appeared on the iPod ad, downloads of Feist's LP
The Reminder jumped from sales of 6,000 copies a week to 19,000. The track itself jumped from 2,000 downloads a week to 73,000 a week! Similarly in the UK after the advertisement aired, '1234' went from No. 102 in the charts to No. 8. And if that wasn't significant enough, Time magazine named it the second best song of 2007, calling it a "masterpiece".
Suffice to say I imagine Sally doesn't have to wait tables anymore.
