TOP 10 THINGS I LEARNT AT ATP'S "I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR" 2013
--
10. Don't get the band back together.
9. My Bloody Valentine are a studio band. Duh. But headlining a music festival really did have me halfway convinced that things might be different. They weren't, really.
9. Author, Twitter-beast and 'last rock critic standing' Chris Weingarten is in Australia and has a pretty dialed in taste in local music.
8. Two hour sets for the fans seems like a good idea. Seems like.
7. Whatever brand and type of P.A. was used in Stage 2, it was the greatest thing ever invented to play electronic music on. Note it down. I want this exact thing at all music festivals from here on out.
6. The Drones seem more impressive in the context of yesterday's line-up of their influences, not less. How is that even possible?
5. I'd like to unlearn this but: man-parts can be used as a paint-brush.
4. The total amount of time I can concentrate on anything that doesn't have a discernible pop song-structure, in a sauna, is about forty-five minutes. In air-conditioning, free jazz can come at me and I don't mind at all.
3. No one takes their shirt off at ATP events. No one.
2. A beer at a festival can cost less than a pint at a Melbourne pub. Maybe miracles can happen.
1. I went to a music festival, in 2013, and had a nice time. Another miracle. So I guess a music festival doesn't have to be curated by booking agents and dry-humped half to death by merchandising and sponsorship. I'll Be Your Mirror Altona wasn't perfectly executed this year, but the idea is still totally sound, and there was a lot of this good idea on show over the weekend. A lot.
