High on the hot flush of announcing to the followers of Splendour in the Grass 2009 that they will be performing for them, MGMT told our youth network details of their new album.

Keyboard guy Ben Goldwasser called Triple J to discuss the festival announcement, and how work on their follow up to Oracular Spectacular is coming along. "Surfy" was the outcome.

"Some of the songs are definitely a little more introspective and then there’s definitely some more surfy, beachy stuff going on."

We didn't hear the broadcast at the time. We were still too busy patting ourselves on the back for breaking the news that they were coming in the first place. (Some people work in the public health care system, we trawl MySpace sites...life's funny like that.) Goldwasser also mentioned that the band will be playing a bunch of new tunes at Splendour. The hiss heard in the background was the deflating souls of 20,000 people already purchasing glowsticks in anticipation of being crushed against the barrier in July and chanting for 'Kids'.

"We’re really excited about the new stuff we’ve been coming up with. I think it’s a little different. It’s going more in a rock direction I think than some of the stuff on the album. We’re going to be playing a tonne of new stuff definitely."

Wonder if this new stuff will be shades of 'Metanoia', the 14 minute B-Side they played on the Australian tour that had 99% of the crowd adjusting their headbands and looking at the roof. As an original and staunch defendant of Oracular Spectacular, we don't much care which direction they go in; it's all good.
