We already knew Pavement were reforming and playing Golden Plains, our favourite festival. "But who would be huddled side of stage with a lanyard looking furtively at the front row whilst they did so?" we wondered. At ease.

Who knew that 20 years after the inception of indie rock's "slacker" tag, that the two figureheads of the genre would be sharing a bill in country Victoria. As Pavement's Steve Malkmus minces around the Trippy Taco stand, Lou Barlow, he of Sebadoh (and Folk Implosion) fame will be tuning up just metres away while on bass duties for '90s guitar gods Dinosaur Jr. The modern day mutation of the genre will be present in Dirty Projectors, while UK shoegaze rejuvenators The Big Pink, Brooklyn wordsmith Jeffrey Lewis and one of the best live bands going - and sure to be amphitheatre favourites - Calexico are just some of the jewels amongst a swathe of reliably interesting bands playing the event.
