LIVE BLOG RECAP:
Thursday 29th September
8:20pm: OK since we're going to be here all night, we might live blog this thing/triple j show for a while. For all you petrol station workers out there.
[Fact: 73% of petrol station workers prefer TheVine.com.au over thanksno.com]
8:22pm: Radio: Did triple J just go off air briefly or is it this stereo I found in the rain?
8:24pm: Radio: I wonder if Franz Ferdinand look too old to be taken seriously now. Sharp clothes distract from liver spots.
8:30pm:
The Getaway Plan are playing.
8:33pm: Radio: Lot of emotion in that last track. Difficult to mow to.
8:34pm: Radio: Arctic Monkeys falling under the spell of Josh Homme was the beginning of the end. Perhaps for all concerned. Except denim.
8:40pm:
Girl Talk is playing. A minor victory for PCs.
8:42pm: Radio: Listen to that synth fart. Digitalism did not listen to this track in the car outside the studio.
8:45pm: It's quite amazing that "Girl Talk sued" is not a widely shared case-study amongst students of copyright. It's because he hasn't been.
This lawyer thinks it's because, "Gillis’s argument that he has transformed the copyrighted materials sufficiently that his work constitutes non-infringing fair use is just too good. I’d go after someone I am more likely to beat."
This guy argues that, "Gillis would be a ready-made hero for copyright reformers; if he were sued, he’d have some of the best copyright lawyers in the country knocking on his door asking to take his case for free."
In a
more recent piece on the New York Times, Gillis claims that to secure permission to use the 373 samples on his latest record,
All Day, it would cost him "millions of dollars".' The article continues: "Some labels would refuse, others would draw him into endless negotiation. But he has never been sued. No one has ever asked him to stop doing what he’s doing. One of the acts he samples on “All Day,” the Toadies, proudly put a link to Girl Talk on their home page." Basically, he gets a free pass because he's so successful. Weird.
8:50pm:
Frenzal Rhomb are playing. Wait until Alan Jones hears of this double-standard.
8:59pm:
Odd Future are playing. The Big Day Out spy finally has something to hang on to.
9:02pm: Radio: Oh Ye Denver Birds: Group falsetto, sample-pads, harmonies, extraneous percussion (aka extra floor tom) as an arrangement. One day soon this will be viewed with the same lens as spandex, denim patches and thinly-disguised homophobia.
9:06pm:
The Jezabels have been added to the bill. They, of course, already knew this.
9:11pm:
Battles are playing. Be great if they brought the demonic escalator as part of their stage set-up. Muse would shit.
9:15pm:
Architecture in Helsinki are added to the bill. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that a couple of years back when they had the real drum kit, they were one of the best live acts in the country. Yeah, I know. Since then...I dunno.
9:20pm:
Thinking back: Gary Numan still looks pretty cool for 53. A lot like David Thorne too.
9:21pm:
Mariachi El Bronx are playing the Big Day Out. Their brute day job as the Bronx memorably
responsible for single-handedly saving the 2008 Meredith Thunderstom Festival. If this were of you, you'd put it in the pool room wouldn't you.
9:25pm:
Parkway Drive are playing and going to make Mariachi El Bronx feel like costumed sissies. Until the Americans see
this:
9:34pm: Radio: Powerglove - sometimes brutal dark synth-pop is the only thing that makes sense anymore.
9:36pm: Shockingly,
Boy & Bear will be playing a festival this summer.
9:43: Much like the Guardian would do at this juncture, let's cut to some Big Day Out Facebook page highlights:
BRING ON CHAD KROEGER
Hey apparantly Ramstein are playing this year?!?!? Idk if it's just a rumour though. That'd be hectic! That mad as song, 'du, du hast' Ahhh love em. And Im petty sure Blink 182 are playing, I think they sing.. 'I can't get started, chemical hearttt'. So Xcited this year!
Lets be honest.. If Justin beiber ends up at BDO.. I will comfortably take a giant shit on the promotors door step! That kid is a jive turkey..
Hahahaha:
9:48pm:
Hilltop Hoods are playing the BDO. I feel dizzy:
9:50pm: Someone just told me I should be putting all the new updates at the top of the page. That
is what the Guardian would do actually. This is just maverick.
9:52pm:
Röyksopp are playing the Big Day Out. The Boiler Room will need a smaller, more relaxed annexe. The Boil Room.
9:56pm:
The Living End are playing the Big Day Out for another time.
10:00pm: And
My Chemical Romance are the last band to be announced tonight. Presumably they'll have a new drummer who
doesn't steal.
10:02pm: Have you seen that incredible
American Juggalo short doco yet? Holy crap, get on that.
Friday 30th September
6:54am: Morning.
Soundgarden just announced as playing. Drummer Matt Cameron is on the radio saying that his favourite memory of playing the Big Day Out in 1997 was going to lunch. And that they have a new record "in the can."
7:05am: Oops? The
New Zealand Herald is saying that
Kanye West and
Kasabian are the other two confirmed headliners. Before Big Day Out or triple j have mentioned anything.
7:26am: Yep,
Kasabian are on the radio talking it up.
7:30am:
*cough*...just practicing.
8:05pm: And over half an hour later:
Kanye West!
8:48am: OK now skateboarding legend
Tony Hawk is "bringing skateboarding back" to the Big Day Out festival, with his Vert Jam Team. And according to organisers, this announcement is just half the coming line-up. "Many more big names to come in the 2nd announce!"
All
official. Thanks for playing.
