Man, have I been resisting posting this story: Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard have apparently got engaged.
We presumably care about two minor indie celebrities planning to get married; Us Magazine in the US certainly does. They got the big news from a proverbial “source close to the couple”. Early reports suggested that the actress/musician/sprite had hooked up with AFI bassist Hunter Burgan but it was quickly corrected to Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard once celebrity mag editors feverishly Wikipedia-ed him.
Deschanel, who has defined the ethereal indie chick in middling films like Elf and The Happening, has dated a handful of minor celebrities, including the bassist from Maroon 5 and fellow hipster actor Jason Schwartzman. She’s a musician herself, performing in the duo If All The Stars Were Pretty Babies and doing an album with M.Ward as She & Him. Ben Gibbard is, of course, Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie, the super lo-fi Washington indie rock outfit.
They’ve apparently managed to keep their year-long relationship low key but I swore everyone already knew they were an item. Regardless, Rolling Stone notes that they have appeared onstage together only once, playing an Everly Brothers cover at an Obama fundraiser back in August.
