The Ting Tings are kind've hard to explain. They're a boy/girl duo from Manchester in the UK. Been kicking around since 2006, after the two members were in a previous band that didn't work out. They're a bit indie and a bit pop. A bit disco and a bit rock. A bit throwaway and a bit kind've...good. In fact they might slide in under the DFA records umbrella if they weren't quite so English.
They're yet to really hit Australia ('cept for a
mention by our resident bloggist in the UK Andy Roberts) but there's been the requisite frothy buzz about them in the English press already. They've even adopted that classic, naive-fronting "Oh we're just a new band and surprised at all the attention" rigmarole that belies the fact that they're signed to an international major label, played on various TV shows and at Glastonbury. They also played SXSW recently with the American press being a little more judicious,
Pitchfork saying "The British duo closed their set with "That's Not My Name", crushing everything they played before it. But hey, one great song is a lot more than most buzz bands plying their wares at SXSW can boast, right?"
Which is only half true. 'That's Not My Name'
is going to be popular and good enough to have people shelling out for the whole record, but there are other tracks such as 'Great DJ' and the 'Take Me Out' aping 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' that are also going to make them feel it's worth it. For now, see them stripped of the bells and whistles in this clip from UK show Late Night With Jools Holland:
