Swamp rock poets The Drones - like their brethren and fellow AMP Award winners Augie March - have begun work on a new album this week.

Where Augie have headed to the relative isolation of New Zealand, The Drones have headed to the resolute isolation of Myrtleford in rural Victoria. Much like their trek to a disused mill in country Cranbrook, Tasmania for the recording of 2006's Gala Mill, the band have set up a studio inside a mud brick gold-rush era house in the foothills of Mt Buffalo, Myrtleford.

Of most interest perhaps - and going some way to eschew the colonial myth-making of The Drones past - is the inclusion of Sydney hip-shaker Burke Reid in the family. More well known as the "Canadian one" in electro-indie band Gerling, Reid has become a celebrated producer/engineer in recent times, thanks to his work on The Mess Halls 2007 AMP Award winning Devils Elbow.

The band head out on tour to the US in July, before returning to cook chorizo and support the albums release in October.

Here's a video of Mike and Dan winning the German leg of Southern Comfort's karaoke competition. Enjoy:
