When this site started way back when, one of the first stories we posted was a rundown on the release of the
Super 8 Diaries DVD. A collaboration between Melbourne filmmakers Matt Richards and Jeremy Rouse, it artfully documents a small slice of the Australian independent music community over several years. Well since that story, the movie's garnered a handful of sweet reviews (including a 5 star number in the latest edition of respected industry mag
Filmink) as well as being picked up for a podcast in the UK. Nice.
To celebrate the launch of the DVD back in January, the directors put on a Melbourne warehouse show that saw hundreds of people turn out for a cinematically lit day of quality music. Bands played, movies were shown, sausages were sizzled and lots of back/head/thigh slapping was had.
But why should Melbourne get all the fun? Rest easy Northerners, for the Super 8 Diary experience is hitting the road. On June 8th the DVD will be presented at a Launch Party in Marrickville, Sydney and will include all the bells and whistles from the Melbourne inception. That is, piles and piles and piles of tube steak. Oh and some bands. As the filmmakers point out:
Tucker Bs (SYD) – Country tinged, screamed and sung songs of love and death
Ohana (WOLLONGONG) – Melodic, mathy goodness
QUA (MELB) – Glitchy Lo-Fi electonica filtered through Japanese helium bubbles
When Chimps Attack (SYD) - Tough like trucks, Chicago style RAWK
Charge Group (SYD - S
oaring, Colonial, Dirty Three-ish soundscapes
Castings (SYD) – Massive 6-piece improvised/deconstruction.
Lola Flash (WOLLONGONG) - New kids, folky, sunny introspection.
Do Not Resuscitate (SYD) – Absolutley brutal, old-school hardcore.
ALPS of NSW (SYD) - Homemade, Portasound, modified, LO-FI oddness.
The launch will be held in new DIY warehouse/arts space DIRTY SHIRLOWS. 32 Shirlow Street, Marrickville. There will also be a photography exhibition, BBQ and previews of the movie on show. Not to mention an influx of hairy, handsome Southerners. Tight.
