Splendour in the Grass moves location in 2010, headline rumours

The facts.

Splendour in the Grass has been looking to move from its location at Belongil Fields in Byron Bay for some time now. Amid legal wrangling, residential discussions and pitchfork waving, organisers have been eyeing off a new festival site positioned on a 660 acre swathe of land at the North Byron Parklands in Yelgun. However the site is currently undergoing approval by the NSW Department of Planning and won't be ready by 2010.

So in 2010, the festival will move north, to Woodford in Queensland. Ie: the same location as the Woodford Folk Festival. I hear there's always a lot of spiders at the Woodford Folk Festival. Y/N?

Another change is that the event will step up a notch in its tenth year by running over three days, and not the traditional two. Splendour '10 will run from Friday July 30th to Sunday August 1st 2010. No word on whether that means the ticket price will be similarly extended.

The downside to the relocation is that Woodford is rather firmly inland. (More spiders inland). So say goodbye to the hangover easing swim in the Byron surf each morning. (And no secret shows by Bloc Party at the Great Northern, come to think of it). The upside is that the expanded paddock can host nearly ALL patrons in camping grounds onsite. Which organisers say will give "more people the full festival experience". Translation: The heady perfume of portaloos wafting through a sodden rainforest while sub bass pounds from the darkness will remain intact, only this time you can't escape to the comforts of your hotel room.

In related news, we have a rather solid tip from someone related to Splendour HQ on whom the headline band will be in 2010. How do we put this? They're from New York. They haven't released an album since 2006. They love Chuck Taylors. They may very well be the original hispsters. Their name can be applied to what our Deep Throat was doing if they were having us on.

Marcus. I think you will find that there is an itty bitty Airport in a close by little town called Brisbane. Yunbond- Splendours proposed site was not in Byron Bay either, but 30 minutes north. There is no public transport and no facilities nearby. They just want you staying put on "their" land so they can harvest more of the cash out of your wallet. The proposed venue was astride a vital nature reserve and last remaining wildlife corridor/ link from the coastal plain up to the World heritage listed rain forest of Mt Warning / Wollumbin national park. Splendour was defeated in the NSW Land and Environment court as they wanted to bulldoze a 40 metre wide cutting through this corridor for you punters to walk through. We say hoorah. Good riddence Splendour!. Ferk off and don't come back!.

I don't think there's an issue with people farming their cash out on "their land" - that's what people willingly go to festivals to do. But Brisbane airport to Woodford is about as useful as arguing on the internet.
