Singer for MGMT, Andrew VanWyngarrden recently spoke to US mag Entertainment Weekly about their new album.

In a short interview that covered being nominated for a Grammy (Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for 'Kids', against the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, and Hall & Oates), opening for Paul McCartney, Jay-Z not using the beat they came up with and announcing to Kid Cudi that Michael Jackson had died, the singer let forth about the new MGMT album Congratulatons, due 2010:

"How’s your next album, Congratulations, going?

We’re almost done. We’re going up for the last mixing session on Sunday. About two weeks later we should be done. It’s pretty exciting.

What can you tell me about what the album will sound like?

For people that just know our singles, it’s going to be a big change. For people who get into some of the other tracks on the first album that were more psychedelic and classic-rock-influenced, they’ll be happy. It’s a pretty natural progression. But a lot of people think of us as an electro duo, and it’s not like that at all. It’s really catchy and really honest and heartfelt in a good way. We dropped some of the irony that you can find in our earlier songs."

Of course the band performed a slew of new tunes at their Splendour set this year, after which we pretty much said the same as above: "A bunch of new songs sound like they'll be interesting on record but fans of the singles so far will stay away in droves. This, you kinda get the impression from their recent, humble interviews, could be the whole idea."

While the singles from Oracular Spectacular were fair undeniable, we're some of the people that got into the "other" tracks on the album - in fact, when we reviewed the album upon release we thought the deeper album cuts were some of their best. (Yeah yeah, so they weren't so hot at Meredith, we've established as much. They still showed promise at their sideshow).

VanWyngartden also told us in our interview back in November 2008 that they were planning on using Dave Friddman once again to mix the record. Considering Oracular Spectacular was some of his best work, fingers crossed.
