Them Crooked Vultures have been fairly marketing savvy in the lead up to their album. Though considering the resume of the people involved (and the bucks) it shouldn't come as a surprise.
Live snippets of the much anticipated supergroup, consisting of Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), have been "leaking" online for months now. Thirty second clips of the band rehearsing in the studio, shaky handycam shots from any one of their numerous "unanounced" festival spots through the European summer, and backstage shots set to radio rips. It's a fairly canny ploy from a band who, let's face it, is going to work best mugging to the converted in a live arena.
Their self-titled debut isn't out until next week, but today the band have put the entire album on YouTube, track by track. On first listen it's incredible how evenly distributed the band's respective day jobs are represented. In equal measures there's the bluesy pomp and groove of Led Zeppelin, the punk, sex and muted guitar tones so indicative of Homme's work and the Bonham-esque dead on rock thump care of Grohl. Oh and Grohl sings on a couple of tracks too. Sweet.
Oh and did we mention that we interviewed John Paul Jones the other day? Just called him up for a chat we did. We're like this -
*taps nose*
And what did he say about his involvement in Them Crooked Vultures?
"I’ve decided that my best career choice is to just always be in the best band in the world."
He also told us about all the songs that didn't make it on the record, the band he nearly started with Jason Bonham and Jimmy Page in Robert Plant's absence, and how he ended up playing a keytar on stage. Essential. Stay tuned.
