We saw La Roux at her Parklife sideshow in Melbourne. We left troubled. It was, as we put it "essentially karaoke", but we still enjoyed it.

How? Were our critical faculties dulled that evening? Did the lip of our Peroni hit the frontal lobe rather than the mouth? Are we not opposed to a band pretending to play a bunch of instruments? Or was Ms. Jackson's cool croon enough for us?

A bit of everything. When it boils down to it, La Roux's debut album is our guilty pleasure of the year. There's something exciting about perfectly formed, simple pop songs - trimmed of fat, enough quirk to appear to have half a brain and well, kinda fun. Blown up live, it's hard not to like. Here's your sugar lump. Open up and say 'aaaah'.

Such an approach might not hold up with a second viewing. Free of the "OMG IT'S REALLY HER" effect and all that. But considering La Roux's debut tour sold out - as well as her set being an unintended headliner at the Parklife festival - we're guessing that a whole bunch of people won't give a shit about that.

La Roux returns in March to play a series of much bigger venues than they did on their first visit. Still, having just one album to play from it will surely just be the same set. And no Sydney? No Brisbane? Fishy. UPDATE: La Roux will appear in Brisbane, Sydney, Coffs Harbour and Newcastle as part of the Bacardi Express tour.
