What were we saying yesterday, that summer is all about musicians going on tour? That’s a slight miscalculation. Summer is all about festivals, and there has been a stack announced recently from all sides of the musical spectrum. Full line-ups and dates at the end…
Firstly, Soundwave just added another chunk of rock and punk and metal to their already mammoth line-up. Try this: Placebo, Anthrax, Motion City Soundtrack, Shinedown, Enter Shikari, Set Your Goals and Closure in Moscow. Huge.
The mother of beat-based bashes, Future Music Festival, has announced its 2010 lineup. Dirty digital legends The Prodigy will headline, with newly-activated live outlet Empire Of The Sun, stylish Scots Franz Ferdinand and Brits Does It Offend You, Yeah? While this sounds a little "band-based", never fear. They also host Booka Shade, John Digweed, David Guetta, Erick Morillo, plus stacks more (and another stack more to be added).
Days Like This has been described as having a Meredith-esque vibe, but in Sydney, without camping, over one day. Okay, we might be overreaching, but they do have an impressive line-up of earthy acts, including Roots Manuva, The Cat Empire, Cat Power & Dirty Delta Blues, The Black Seeds, Pivot, Ugly Duckling, Mayer Hawthorne, LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad and Dilated Peoples. Whatever the vibe, it’s sure to be positive.
For the tough kids out there, the Boys Of Summer fest returns, this time hosting Buffalo hardcore rock brosephs Every Time I Die, alongside ripper little Byron crew 50 Lions, roughneck thrashcore dudes from New Hampshire Trap Them and fearsome NSW melodic hardcore outfit Mary Jane Kelly. There are heaps of all ages and underage shows all around the nation.
If you have itchy feet, strap on your dancing shoes in preparation for the mammoth DJ fest Stereosonic. It’s a forbidding international and local line-up, featuring Canada’s Deadmau5, Sweden’s Axwell and John Dahlbäck, Dutchman Fedde Le Grand, French luminary Laurent Garnier with a live band, as well as local faves Cut Copy DJs, Grant Smillie, Andy Murphy, Acid Jacks, Grafton Primary, Bag Raiders, and scads more. Happens at five points of the nation in November and December.
The Coffs Harbour festival Open Arms has released a second line-up announcement and it’s looking like solid celebration of Aussie music. The line-up includes Australia’s premier hip-hoppers Hilltop Hoods, Perth prog rockers Karnivool, Melbourne grunge revivalists Children Collide, hot young things Cassette Kids, Bertie Blackman, Regular John and a bunch more.
