"Specialknives: The study you cited only relates to a single aspect of psychology and physiology: that of human sexual response. I can assure you that there's far more to the workings of human society than merely sexual response, so if you want to make statements about the relative genetic differences between the sexes compared with the social differences, you'll have to do rather better than that. You say that the advantage afforded to attractive people is due to the "choices all of us make to consider beauty important," but I would challenge that viewpoint in that we do NOT have a choice about whether or not we value beauty. We ALL value beauty - some people may deny it, but they'll still dress up for a date or a job interview, they'll still prefer an attractive life partner to an unattractive one (all else being equal). The fact is, our brains are hard-wired to value physical features that suggest social, genetic and reproductive superiority, and both beauty and privilege (as a representation of social status) are entrenched in those choices. But I say, so what? It's naive and transparent to even lie that Miss Universe pageants value intelligence as much as beauty, but I say that no lie is needed. It's about beauty, but beauty is to be celebrated, not condemned. Isn't it also a transparent lie to pretend that society as a whole does NOT value beauty (and we're talking both men and women here) - to sweep pageants under the carpet as if we're rather embarrassed that that aspect of our society is made so obvious? "Oh I'm sorry about my sister, she's the black sheep of the family - terribly beautiful - we don't really like to talk about her..." Ridiculous. Beauty should be acceptable, just like any facet of society: creativity, intellect, culture, religion, or race. It certainly shouldn't be the basis for stereotyping, belittlement, or abuse, as purported by this article's author."

"Those parties where she belittles the guest of honour with attacks about their intelligence and why it doesn't matter if they look good, then says something like "but it's your birthday, and all credit to you for that"? LoL. Awkward."

"Tooblack: In its context (see, um, the rest of her post), Hick was hardly being celebratory. If that's the best celebration she can manage, I wouldn't recommend attending her parties. :)"

"SpecialKnives: The first part of my latest post wasn't a response to Hicks' article, but a response to your claim that I said (quoting you): "women should be intelligent and beautiful". Secondly: I do wonder if you've noticed, but men and women are quite different in many ways beyond appearances. Hormones and brain functions operate in quite different ways, and what *would* be surprising would be if men and women behaved in exactly the same ways too. Given your apparent familiarity with "research" (though I notice you cite no references), you would surely know this, so your arguments about differences in the quantity of portrayals of men and women is rather moot, unless you have some proposal to change the genetic makeup of male and female chromosomes forthwith. Not so redundant is my own point of view: that we should celebrate and embrace differences for what they are: strengths. Women contribute enormously to the world, in different ways to men. Beautiful people have advantages they were born with which they should be free to use, just as intelligent people do. Indeed, by privilege of your (I assume) birth into a first-world country, you have a god- (or luck-) given advantage over 96% of the world's population, who are poorer than you. When you feel inclined to give up your natural-born economic advantage and claw your way up from the bottom (or, heck, even the middle), I'll be more inclined to take you seriously! Until that day, I will continue to believe that human beauty is to be celebrated."

"Apparently, QJump is fail (to use popular internet semantics). A number of avid fans hoping to patronise Splendour have been frustrated by the online ticketing system, and a Facebook group has now sprung up dedicated to jumping the fence on the day: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=14791133137&ref=mf Sounds like those IT guys will miss some sleep after all... "Specialknives seems to have misinterpreted my position. I haven't said that women *SHOULD* be beautiful and intelligent, I've said that women shouldn't be ashamed of being beautiful, nor should beauty imply a reduced level of intellect. Many of these contestants are university graduates or students. But as another poster implied, the questions they are asked are often outside their area of expertise or experience. Ask any qualified accountant about their thoughts on a solution to water quality issues in the Murray Darling sometime... you'll be surprised how dumb an intelligent person can sound when they have to answer under pressure. I also refute SKs claim that society doesn't have equivalent "standards" for men. There certainly are male modeling contests all over the world that don't involve body building. Cleo, Cosmo and the rest all have annual "bachelor" contests or equivalents (where you'll never see overweight or ugly guys, I assure you), and these days you're just as likely to hear girls gossiping about guys bums as vice-versa. Good times, and this kind of sexual liberation is *EXACTLY* what many feminists have fought for for decades. "

""Organisers claim theirs is some higher purpose of quiz shows, but truly their sole aim is to select the best mental specimens, to completely objectify and reduce someone to the sum of their intellect alone." How is this a more valid or worthy contest, hmm? Does winning Jeopardy somehow make one a better or more worthy human being?"

"There's sure to be pressure from all of the various vested interests and bitter also-rans. But true freedom is the freedom to fulfill one's personal potential, and not to be categorised as "dumb" because you're beautiful (isn't this a form of discrimination in itself?), or "smart" because you're in a suit. A wise person makes the best use of their assets. If some of us were born smart (how lucky), and can make lots of money in great jobs, how dare we discriminate against others choosing to use their own god-given gifts, as if they are somehow inferior or less worthy?"

"What a narrow-minded, cliche and frankly antiquated view you're espousing. The view you're advocating seems to be that women must choose between valuing their appearance and valuing their ability; that somehow, entrants in a pageant are incapable of intelligent thought. Women can be beautiful AND capable. An intelligent woman might well choose an event like this to give them personal or career opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have access to. You'll probably berate me for not considering the wider ramifications on womens' rights. But I put it to you: isn't it the ultimate right of women to be able to choose their own personal identity, and not be shamed for not conforming to a cropped-headed, hairy-legged, bra-burned stereotype of female "freedom"?"
