Last week marked the 45th anniversary of Star Trek, probably the most bonerrific franchise ever. If you're not into Trek, I understand, but I also want to slap you. Then hug you. Then make you watch some sweet, sweet TREK.

Because of this amazing birthday occasion, there've been loads of Trek related geek stories doing the rounds, so I figured before we get to the regular tech/gadget/nerd stuff, we'd deal with those.

What you see here is a timeline of the development of the series. It's not exhaustive (not if you're a hardcore fan), and it's primarily concerned with the production, rather than the Trek universe chronology and events. But it gives a wonderful overview of just how much the franchise has achieved over nearly half a century.

Kotaku, a wonderful gaming blog, did a write-up of the amazing hybrid point-and-click Trek game, Star Trek 25th Anniversary. The reviewer hates Trek, and the comments section is filled with trolls and heathens, but the review itself gives the game the credence and consideration it deserves; if you can *cough* find a legit copy *cough cough* online *cough* then play it; the entire original series cast does voice acting for it, and it serves canonically as a continuation of the original TV series.

Also, as added incentive, you get to recruit redshirts, and then watch them die.

By the way, if you have no idea what redshirts are, they're effectively dispensable nobodies taken on away missions, and then killed to emphasise the gravity of the situation. It's sort of what like Whedon does when he's feeling like being a lazy prick, only he does it with lead characters. here's Sam Rockwell's character in Galaxy Quest explaining the phenomenon:

God, that film is perfect.

Oh, and there's also a way you can DELICIOUSLY CELEBRATE! TREK COOKIES!

Darla over at Bakingdom has put together a step-by-step guide on how you can make yourself these Trek cookies. Or you can not, and wallow in your own crapulence.

Oh, and speaking of sci fi, this week marked a kind of depressing point for Back to the Future fans… I know, I know, the shoes and glasses came out. But we also had to watch as Christopher Lloyd (who still kicks ass, and who did an amazing job in the most recent season of Fringe) got back into character as Doc Emmett Brown, and did an ad FOR AN ARGENTINIAN ELECTRONICS STORE, CALLED GARBINO.

Jesus Christ.

I'm going to close with something a bit perkier; someone has dummied up Harry Potter's resume, and I'll be honest… it looks a lot like mine.

See you all later this week!
