Instagram sex account sparks student riots in Sweden
At least 27 high school students in Sweden were arrested on Tuesday following riots reportedly sparked by an Instagram account posting rumours about classmates' sexual activity.
The Instagram account, which amassed at least 7000 followers before being shut down, asked followers to send in pictures of "sluts" in the Gothenburg area. More than 200 pictures of boys and girls were received, according to Swedish news outlet The Local.
After the Instagram account was disabled, students began posting rumors and accusations on a Facebook group. A separate Facebook group accused a 17-year-old girl of being the original creator of the Instagram account and encouraged students to amass at her school and take their revenge against her.
Hundreds of students converged on the girl's school Tuesday. Law enforcement attempted to block off streets and shuttle people to safety, but they had difficulty containing the unruly mob until the atmosphere calmed in the mid-afternoon.
Video of the "Instagram riots" was captured and uploaded to YouTube by at least one participant, and is embedded below.
