If you were a kid growing up in the late '80s and early '90s chances are you’re familiar with Robotech. Sliced together from three different Japanese animes, the cartoon series told the story of an elite defense force using robot mechs to protect Earth from alien invasion. It was "totally radical". And if you were a little kid you totally wanted a mech of your own. Thanks to Japan’s Sakakibara-Kikai that dream is now a reality.
Although the company is involved in all sorts of boring everyday machinery, they also have a weird kink for exoskeleton suits – aka mechs. Having messed around with different designs over the years, they now have two fully functioning models available for sale. Actual legit, strap yourself in, walk around and do stuff, mechs.
Their flagship product, the LandWalker, stands 3.4 metres, weighs a thousand kilograms, can accommodate one person and comes with mounted guns. (The guns only fire rubber sponges at the moment... But you can strap a couple of ICMBs to the sides once you get them home.) There’s also a scaled down kids model – sans guns – for family bonding time.
If you have a spare $350 thousand in your bank account and really want to piss off the neighbours a personalised mech is the last word in Peter Pan syndrome awesome.
