Internet idiocy: ‘Milking’ dubbed ‘The New Planking’
Who's saying what
A group of students from Newcastle in England have become the Internet’s latest ‘sensation’ – a term far better reserved for K-Pop visionaries and babies sucking lemons – after taking the time to film, edit and upload a series of iPhone-recordings where people willingly douse their fully-clad selves in milk, in public.
With House of Pain’s Jump Around as the video’s decisive soundtrack, the almost three-minute-long clip has amassed over 120,000 views since its online inception last Wednesday, sparking students around Britain to christen pubs, roundabouts and roads bona fide ‘milking spots’.
Like planking, Batmanning, owling, cinnamoning and all other preceding moments of online senselessness that have culminated in this climactic moment, it is hard to say exactly what the appeal of soiling a perfectly dry outfit and turning yourself into a limp sour smelling piece of protoplasm is – but each to their own I guess.
The brainboxes behind the milk-volution shared their thoughts with the Daily Mail (because of course they did) and Tom Morris, aged 22, explained “we were just in our kitchen talking about doing it outside Starbucks in Jesmond and thought it would be really funny. We did that, uploaded the video to Facebook and got a load of likes. So then we thought ‘why not just make a video?’” Well, lots of reasons.
Apparently, “students in Edinburgh, Nottingham and Cirencester are all filming their own versions of Milking Newcastle as the trend spreads across the UK's institutions for higher education.”
