Austereo chairman Peter Harvie has admitted he did not listen much to his company's controversial Kyle and Jackie O radio show.
Mr
Harvie fielded a barrage of questions today about the Sydney-based show
with shock jocks Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, during a briefing on the
company's
financial results.
A journalist asked Mr Harvie whether programming that included a masturbation race, a so-called "wank-off," appealed to him.
Sandilands
and others reportedly held a competition on air in May that involved
giving contestants pornography and seeing who could masturbate the
fastest and who had the highest sperm count.
Mr Harvie said he was not the best judge of whether such programs were appealing.
"I am afraid that I don't hear much of the Kyle and Jackie O show because I am located in Melbourne," Mr Harvie said.
According
to media reports the Kyle and Jackie O Hour of Power was aired weekdays
at 6pm in Melbourne on Fox FM until August 3, when they were suspended.
Sandilands
and Jackie O recently sparked a furore over a segment in which a
14-year-old girl, who was hooked up to a lie detector, said she had
been raped when she was 12.
Some major sponsors withdrew advertising from the network and the broadcasters were suspended for two weeks.
Mr Harvie said the company had to adhere to industry codes, but needed to keep in mind the creativity of its programs.
"In
terms of the tone of the shows, I think we must be sure that we don't
introduce elements that could preclude the flavour of shows, which
obviously does have some appeal to audiences around Australia," Mr
Harvie said.
Mr Harvie refused to answer questions
about how much Sandilands and Jackie O were paid, or how many
advertisers had pulled out in protest.
"At this
stage the impact (on company earnings) is not material, but obviously
we continue to monitor the situation," Mr Harvie said.
