Robyn Twomey shoots retired Playboy Bunnies

American photographer Robyn Twomey interrogates ideas of beauty, sexuality and aging by photographing portraits of retired Playboy Bunnies. The women Twomey shoots were all involved with the iconic men’s magazine over twenty years ago, and it’s refreshing to see how few of the former pin-ups have opted to slice and dice their faces in pursuit of lasting youth. Instead, we see women with charisma and a sense of self.

Twomey has shot her subjects to look not provocative but rather powerful. The New York and San Francisco based photographer has worked for Time and the New York Times and the way she has approached this portraiture series bears stylistic similarities to mainstream depictions of celelbrities and politicians. While some of the women have kept grasp of their bunny identities, others have now chosen to be seen in an entirely different light, and Twomley has recorded both choices with impressive neutrality.
