What do you think of art school?
I think art school is a lucky place to be, it can be tough and draining but really, having your own little nook to make things in, meeting some total weirdos and other really special people makes for a pretty incedible environment. I wish everyone could go to art school at some point in their lives because your given the chance to just go crazy with ideas and projects.
What made you want to begin the road to becoming an artist?
I took the art road because drawing is my favourite thing in the world to do and hopefully I'll be able to do it forever! As a kid I was always making things... I come from a big family where everyone does something art related so it felt pretty natural to study art and be a grown up making grown up things.
Who are the people in your artworks?
I imagine the girls I draw to be secret sisters, or girls in a mystery club floating around having little lonely adventures. Like girl scouts of life or something, but a little bit gloomy sometimes. They are girls in books, and faces in old photos and in the background of movies and singers of forgotten cheesy pop songs.
What are some of your favourite art destinations in Melbourne?
Whenever I feel a little uninspired I like to visit Footscray and spree in the $2 shops, have a lurk in Savers or visit Magnani Paper where you can buy beautiful, good quality paper and bound books. At the Footscray library they also display peoples weird collections of things, they had some old scout memorabilia on display, an old ladies collection of shells, all sorts of crazy collections. The State Library is a good place too because their are always free exhibitions and beautiful rooms to sit and read in (or draw unsuspecting people).
How are you preparing for the winter?
Buying lots of discounted tights from Forges of Footscray and getting all my broken boots fixed at the cobbler... but i've just spent January and December in Montreal so Melbourne winter preperation is a little less intense!
What are some of your favourite things on your desk at the moment?
A pulp- mystery novel from the 60's called "The Gaunt Woman" which has a recommendation quote on the cover claiming it to be "as gripping as a giant clam", a container full of raw red cabbage because its delicious and this wacky post card from a friend over seas which says "if you meet a person, and the sun comes out, stay in touch", good advice!
