The Museum of Contemporary Art has invited the father of Hip Hop in Australia to take part in two live events responding to the theme of the 2008 Biennale of Sydney, Revolutions – Forms That Turn.
Urban dance legend Darrio Phillips, one of the originators of hip hop dance in Australia, will lead a live dance performance at the MCA on Sunday 20 July, from 2.00pm – 4.00pm. The free performance is part of the ‘LIVE @ MCA’ series of events taking place this winter where dancers and DJs have been invited to interpret the themes of Revolutions – Forms That Turn by responding to revolutions, rotation, mirroring, repetition, reversing and changing perspectives.
The performance features both Hip Hop and Krump dance styles which are characterised by expressive and highly energetic moves, with a focus on improvisation and hip hop music culture.
Originating from Ohio, USA, Darrio came to Australia in the early 1980s where he became the country’s first Hip Hop dance teacher and started up one of the first street dance schools in Sydney. He has choreographed and danced for artists such as Peter Andre and Selwyn, and for tours with Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Bobby Brown and RUMBA. He is credited with introducing Hip-hop dance into the sports & PE curriculum of Catholic & State Education departments.
MCA visitors inspired by Darrio’s performance can attend Hip Hop dance workshops lead by Darrio the following Sunday 27 July at the MCA, with Hip Hop for beginners from 12.00 – 2.00pm and a Krump workshop from 2.30 – 4.30pm. Both workshops are led by Darrio and will teach the foundations of urban dance styles, along with some free style skills.
LIVE @ MCA also presents a DJ workshop which explores the themes of the 2008 Biennale of Sydney. This crash course for budding DJs takes place on Sunday 3 August, from 12.00 – 4.00pm at the MCA. Attendees will learn about Hip Hop culture, beat mixing and scratching skills through practical demonstrations.
