Matthew Sleeth - Pattern Recognition

Where
Sophie Gannon Gallery, Albert St, Richmond, Vic
When
10am Saturday 25 October

Matthew Sleeth's use of serial photographic images seeks to bring order to the chaos around us. Pattern Recognition features a photographic series drawn from contemporary life, including abandoned umbrellas, fire extinguishers, security cameras and Ground Zero. In the process of making these images, Sleeth draws attention to the history of photography's relationship to collecting, cataloguing and obsession.

One broken umbrella is just a broken umbrella, whereas a series of broken umbrellas says something about mass-produced waste. A houseplant is perceived as beautiful, while a fire extinguisher is ignored as a utilitarian object. Sleeth presents both on equal footing, his work bringing a sense of visual pleasure and seduction to conceptual art.

The full exhibition is held at Sophie Gannon Gallery in Richmond and the Festival is also presenting imagery from Pattern Recognition throughout the city on billboards, tramstops, video screens and other seemingly random locations.

Matthew Sleeth is a Melbourne-based artist. His work has been exhibited throughout Australia and internationally including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Cologne, Berlin and Venice. In March 2008, Sleeth opened a solo exhibition at the Aperture Foundation and in 2009 he will exhibit at Claire Oliver Gallery in New York.

Exhibition runs from Oct 9 - 25, 2008. Tue - Sat, 11am - 5pm.
