Curated by the Queensland Art Gallery, 'Contemporary Australia: Optimism' will celebrate the ways contemporary artists envision the world, exploring it with hope, energy, passion, playfulness and above all, with the commitment to questioning and invention that comes out of the artist's studio.
It will present work by more than 60 emerging, mid-career, and senior Indigenous and non-Indigenous contemporary artists from every state and territory and it will encompass many facets of contemporary Australian visual art and culture, including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation, video and video installation, cinema, animation, performance, music and comedy. Works by senior artists such as Queenslander Robert MacPherson, Indigenous painter Sally Gabori and much-loved cartoonist Michael Leunig, as well as Victorian painter Robert Owen, leading eastern Arnhem Land cultural leader Nawurapu Wunungmurra, leading mid-career artists Vernon Ah Kee, Patricia Piccinini, Scott Redford and Jan Nelson and by emerging artists such as Tony Albert, Gemma Smith and Victoria Reichelt will feature.
'Contemporary Australia: Optimism' will be accompanied by a broad ranging public program of artist talks, panel discussions and lectures, as well as a major, full colour publication.
