BECI ORPIN - Outside over there
Solo Exhibition at
Outré Gallery from 23 August till 14 September.
Melbourne artist Beci Orpin is the heart and soul of the fashion label Princess Tina. Anthropomorphised mushrooms dance on the backs of unicorns. Cute lil teeth cry. Folk art motifs sprinkle the landscape. Foxes roam at night. And decoration rules the school.
Her new hometown show at Outré Gallery is a spin with lots of deliciously homely themes with a twist. Its cosy but also spiked with darkness and nightmares. The unexpected mixed with fairytales.
Symbolic imagery includes a series of rooftops with mysterious silhouettes and dreamlike objects perched thereon - exploring the dual paranoid and imaginative world of domestic life.
She also takes patchwork as a theme and design premise - where it becomes a signifier for not only women's craft, domesticity and folk traditions but also for the way stories and our lives are pieced together.
Critters and members of the Beci Orpin menagerie also make a re-appearance -- birds are especially lively in more than a couple of incarnations.
Rooftop creeping, animals galore, fairytale narratives and a big nod to craft -- this is an art exhibition that will warm the cockles of your heart and perhaps give you a nightmarish chill too.
