Backyard Cathedral charts the reactions of Patrick O’Brien and Gemma Weston in response to a recurring weekly apparition, appearing in the form of an outdoor altar that stands as a relic of an abandoned devotion to belief in something larger.
This show is the convergence of two contemporary art practices pairing Patrick’s take on the suburban experience with Gemma’s drawings and watercolours to engage in a discussion surrounding the role of spiritually significant sites. Such imagery underlines the uncertainties of contemporary existence and attempts to locate the role of religion at the present juncture.
The exhibition, Backyard Cathedral, is a shrine to a specific site, in which the artists examine the relationships between faith and the suburban everyday.
