The best and worst dressed at the ARIA Awards

The best and worst dressed at the ARIA Awards

Australian music’s night of nights is, in a way, a little like fashion, in that most of the time the results are completely predictable. Just as every season, every luxury label produces a dozen iterations of the monogrammed sneaker, to be sold in airports and never seen on the runway, every year the ARIAs picks exactly who we think they will, furthering our image of Australia as a small pond with a lot of colossal fishies in it.

Also a little predictable is the style, in that we know it will be a little bit cocktail and no where near as nice as the David Jones fashion parade. Isn’t there something sort of sad about the state of our country’s style, when the very, very best of it comes out at a department store event? I mean, come on people.

Speaking of David Jones, you'll notice the company's logo in the background of all of the photographs. What you may also notice is that most of the stronger looks of the evening were arranged by DJs, including Ruby Rose, Jessica Mauboy, the Ginger and Smart girls, Montana Cox and Samantha Harris.

There were a few  other bright spots, and more than a few blindingly bright frocks. Perhaps the most tragic moment of all was the way Taylor Swift breezed in clad in an Elie Saab gown, that despite being antique white, semi-sheer and floor length, managed to be exactly the right level of not-so-formal for the occasion, waxing the floor with every single Australian fashionista in the process.

The best home-grown look of the night went to B1 and B2. While the pyjama dressing craze may be drifting out of vogue internationally, this sophisticated twenties inspired trend suits them perfectly.

Am I the only one that hated Taylor Swifts dress? It is so boringly unoffensive it comes in its own special shade of "blah"! I liked what Jasinta Campbell wore, it suited her, that and Lanie Lane in Lisa Ho.

P.s. Carmen Smith is wearing Kitty Grace, not AD.

Even with the detail it just looks like those crappy Grecian bridesmaid dresses that are meant to suit everybody shape but actually look bad on everyone.

Taylor Swift's dress is nice but forgettable. There's nothing about it that stands out and grabs attention. Compared to Jessica Mauboy's dress, which has a very simple cut but is done so well and in those wonderful sparkles, Taylor's dress just fades to blandness.

The Chris Cheney and Kimbra comments are perfection, but I want to know what the hell is going on with the guy in the background of the second Kimbra shot - he looks like an escapee from and episode of The Fresh Prince, probably one of Will Smith's no-good old friends from west Philly.
