Million Dollar Decorator's Martyn Lawrence-Bullard - Interview

With a client list that includes Cher, Sir Elton John and David Furnish, Cheryl Tiegs, Kid Rock, Christina Aguillera, Jimmy Choo CEO Tamara Mellon and royalty from several countries,  it isn't any wonder Martyn Lawrence-Bullard was mobbed at his Sydney hotel this month, on his first visit to Australia as an adult. The star of Bravo TV's Million Dollar Decorators is a seasoned traveller (it is his belief that travelling the world is the best training in interior design a person can get) who's collaborative, eclectic work speaks a poetry of its own.

A close and communicative connection with his customers is key to his work ethic, and whether it be working with luxe materials and prints from Tamara Mellon's shoe collection or mixing the perfect Hèrmes Kelly-Bag-Green for Sir Elton John's lounge room wall, his interiors are always an extension of the owner's personality or brand. His style effortlessly blends cultures, creating worldly interiors inspired by Turkish, Ottoman, Uzbekistani, Chinese, Tibetan, Indonesian (the list is endless) influences and he often sources his pieces from as far a Marrakech.

For Cher, his touches on her Malibu mansion and L.A. townhouse are a celebration of her passion for all things oriental. Moroccan, Syrian, Buddhist and Indian intertwine with an effect that is luxurious and comfortable without feeling lost in a disparate collage of culture. Each and every corner of her properties tell a story, from the former bed of Natacha Rambova (Rudolf Valentino's lesbian wife) found in and amongst an auction in an MGM back-lot, to the side wall of a Rajasthani palace used to encompass Cher's 16th Century opium bed; a small, cosy and luxurious space she enjoys curling up in to watch television.

Ever fond of the luxe, Martyn uses methods and materials dreamed up by his wild imagination combined with his skill for sourcing the exotic. White gold mosaics, Bottega Veneta platinum woven leather walls, silver chainmail drapes, gold tea paper and tea-dyed wall coverings earn him his official tire as Million Dollar Decorator. Whilst visiting Sydney, headlining a sold-out seminar at the Decoration + Design trade fair he spoke, possessing a voice of pure silk velvet, impeccable personal style and a charisma that had me a little enamoured. I was able to sit with him (breathless) to chat about his decorating adventures, interior product lines, and just how he manages to keep it all so luxurious.
