Garance Doré says she’s knocked back book offers because she’s holding out for a movie deal. The fashion illustrator and blogger is currently working on a TV show with boyfriend Scott Schuman in the U.S. and will be in Australia in May during
RAFW.
“I have had a few proposals to do a book and I had already started working on one, but right now I am really interested in doing a movie. Maybe one day I’ll do a book, but I think I still want to develop more my point of view before I make a book. In life it’s not about perfection, but having a unique point of view that makes a difference,” she said on the phone form Paris.
incorporating more video into her blog, experimenting with the medium she wants to move into.To her film is the more exciting medium. “I have had some great offers, but there are downsides. When you do a book, you don’t realise that you are at home a lot on your own. It is lonely making a book.”
The success of the blog saw Garance launch into photography, a new way of exploring fashion and female forms. “Because I am an illustrator first, I use the camera to play with light. I already had an eye for composition and more than anything I am interested in the people. Scott taught me that one good shot is better than 10 average pictures and I often make friends with the subjects, which is why in my blog you see the same person over.”
A successful blog has a few key ingredients, says Garance. “You need to build up trust with your readers. Your integrity is very important and you must also choose carefully the people that you work with and follow your instinct.”
Garance travels constantly for her work. She had just left Arizona and was in Paris for a brief stint before coming to Australia via Japan when we spoke. But does she find it draining? No way. “I figure you are lucky if you get some years in your life to travel like this, so I really want to enjoy it.”
She won't be hunting fashion in Japan, just taking a few moments to replenish her inspiration bank. “Inspiration is everywhere you go and it’s much more than fashion. I would say I like fashion, but I find other things more inspiring." Magazines like Paris Vogue, Interview and The Gentlewoman and websites like The Selby also inspire her.
Finally in May she and Scott will be back in Australia, a trip she's very much looking forward to. At Westfield Bondi and Doncaster she will host the launch of her illustrations of Australian-designed clothes. The work came naturally to her, and makes full use of her whimsical yet sexy style. Her previous trip to
RAFW gave her a strong sense of the Aussie girl - "very European", she calls us - and an affinity for Australian fashion design.
The Westfield Garance Doré Exhibition, preview below, will be on show from 28th April – 23rd May Westfield Doncaster and Westfield Bondi Junction.
