Best Fashion at the 2013 AACTA Awards
Who's saying what
Looking at Cate Blanchette Jessica Mauboy, Elisabeth Blake, Michala Banas, Elizabeth Debicki, Sophie Lowe, Grace Huang and Pia Miranda, you could be forgiven for thinking the AACTA Awards had a fire and ice theme, for all the red and white on show. Sadly if Emily VanCamp did stalk through the back entrance and reap her Revenge, it didn't make the papers.
As far as regional awards ceremonies go, the AACTAs didn’t do too badly fashion-wise, with a mixture of international heavy-hitters like Armani, Burberry and Gucci and local favourites like Alex Perry and Scanlan and Theodore showing up on the red carpet.
Some of the most elegant actresses in the world are Australian – and two of them were in attendance, (Hi Cate! Hi Nic!) – so it is perhaps not surprising that our local film industry has close ties to fashion.
One of the nicest things about the AACTA Awards is that most of the gowns chosen don't come with five figure price tags. This means it's possible to talk about take away trends without floating into lala-land. The best style lesson was white lace un-bridalled. Elizabeth Debicki wore it demurely, while Grace Huang’s gown had a certain lingerie sultriness. Out here in the real world, we’re rarely called upon to dress more formally than ‘cocktail’, but if the occasion does call for it, the pale look is worth a try. It’s dramatic but light, more high-impact than hard to pull off. Though no one wore this exact style, a long sleeved lace bodice with a full skirt in a contrasting texture is a particularly flattering way to wear white or shell lace. Plus lace, unlike satin, doesn’t wrinkle.
