Few things in Sydney could be referred to as an institution. Harry’s Café de Wheels? Maybe. Beers at Icebergs on a Sunday afternoon? No thanks. Emerging from an Oxford St club while the sun rises? Um, nevermind. Fewer still fashion institutions spring to mind. (Keep in mind Alex Perry’s sunglasses don’t count.)

Fashion is a fickle beast, a constant shifting plane of openings and closings, parties and wakes, comings and goings. With all of these happenings it’s hard, if not impossible, to single out the ones that deserve to stick around and ingrain themselves into our ever-changing subconscious.

One such institution is a man called Dion Kovac. A man who has weathered the storms of fashion retail and emerged unscathed. Last week marked the opening of his latest venture, an unassuming space on Burton Street, Darlinghurst, called One of a Kind.

Kovac has carved a formidable niche from the retail/fashion landscape with Our Spot – now One of a Kind puts a new spin on much loved pop-up store mentality. Specialising in Australian luxury menswear, One of a Kind houses a number of autumn/winter collections from labels such as Three Over One, Rittenhouse, The Cloak Room and Claude Maus. Swedish label Whyred and Superfine tick the denim box, while Generic Surplus will keep your feet not only comfortable this winter, but also looking dangerously on point. For the discerning sartorial gentlemen out there (can I get a holla?) Grenson should keep you in good stead. In all, a veritable feast for all your clothing needs.

Fusing fashion with 20th Century Modern, to compliment the main focus of the store, Dion has hand picked a selection of vintage furniture and treasured designer pieces from the likes of Dior, Margiela and Comme des Garcons, not labels to turn your nose up at, I can assure you. With a constantly rotating roster of garments and the ever friendly and always genial Dion, to put simply, it can’t be missed.

It’s with open arms that we welcome One of a Kind. It’s not everyday a store opens with such vision and history to back it up. With garments to suit almost all tastes and with Dion’s undeniably keen eye for pieces that won’t just look good today, but will last for years to come, One of a Kind well and truly lives up to its name.

One of a Kind is open Tuesday to Friday from 12pm to 6pm and Saturday 11am to 5pm.
