Heaped on metal jewellery has become the choice du jour over the last few seasons. The days of dainty rings and delicate charm bracelets have been replaced with a modern-day styled armour of piled on cocktail rings, oversized cuffs and chainmail accessories. Makes going through the metal detector at the airport a bit of a bitch but a girl’s gotta suffer for a style, am I right?

American label Anndra Neen’s cage jewellery and accessories may just be the Holy Grail for those modern warriors looking for their next metal fix. Founded only last year by sister’s Phoebe and Annette Stephens, the label’s handmade copper, brass and nickel-silver jewellery has gained much attention in the US, and is now available in Australia at leading Brisbane boutique Fallow.

The Stephens sister’s grew up in Mexico surrounded by art and artists, including their painter, sculptor and jewellery designer grandmother, who happened to be besties with other artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Naturally their childhood and grandmother has influenced their exotic designs, as the two sister’s mix mediums and fuse varying cultural elements such as Egyptian motifs, Japanese design and French Medieval armour to create their own artefact styled pieces.

The label’s first collection Boy Baba, revolves around clever cage-like creations that appear both solid and delicate all at once. The rustic style of mixed metals are twisted and shaped into varying sized cuffs, rings, neck pieces and cage styled bags.

Not exactly airport friendly but they sure are pretty.
