If Robert Palmer took the 8.09am Croxton train each morning and alighted at Flinders St Station, this is exactly what everyone on the train with him would look like. Tall, leggy, black-clad and impeccably groomed. Just strutting to work. Maybe pouting while fumbling for their myki. Staring catwalk vacantly at weird public transport dudes.
That’s not quite what was going on this week at Flinders St Station. A mob of models descended outside the station for The Spirit of the Black Dress flashwalk, a kind of flashmob-meets-catwalk thing.
The models wore dresses created by fashion graduates including Renee Bock, Shagun Maheshwari, Tia Carrigan and Melissa Mahony for The Spirit of the Black Dress fashion photography exhibition.
Part of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival’s cultural program, the exhibition showcases design from ten emerging fashion and textile designers who have created garments that are not only beautiful to look at, but nice to the world.
Yup, the spirit of that black dress released by Coco all those years ago is still sustainable.
The Spirit of the Black Dress exhibition will be held at Georges on Collins, 195 Little Collins St, Melbourne, from Friday, March 12 to Sunday, March 21 from 12pm to 6pm daily. It’s free!
