It must be nice to live in a country like Brazil. If you don’t agree with me already, you will in just a moment. Imagine this; it’s fashion week, the runways are awash with short dresses, powerful colours and striking florals. But the collections are not for summer. These brightly bursting, vibrantly thriving collections are for winter.
The theme for Rio Fashion Week 2009 is recycling and environmental sustainability in fashion. What better way to reflect this than with a bouquet of blossoming pieces, in colourful, textured brilliance? My favourite collection so far is from
Giulia Borges, who, in keeping with the theme, has innovatively combined patterns, textures and mediums to create amazing tribal outfits that are so ready to wear I could happily have them walk right into my wardrobe and take up residence. This is definitely a designer to watch, as I’m envisaging world domination done in effervescent Brazilian style.
I was as eagerly impressed by the darker offerings of
Coven’s shaggy dresses. A cross between
Felder Felder and
Givenchy with a Brazilian carnival twist, this collection was markedly in vogue and with a pleasing dose of originality and spunk. Likewise,
Redley’s military-themed show, held against the lush green forest background, put an interesting twist on a current trend. The patterns in this collection caught my eye, and as I compared these patterns to the standard issue, drab army camouflage, I imagined the models could easily blend in to a background of dazzlingly coloured flowers to form a blossom army.
Rio Fashion Week has only just begun, but it has been a veritable garden of budding delights. I’m holding on with baited breath to see what the rest of the week will unearth!
