I have short hair. The thing is, you see, for all its benefits - mine is particularly quick drying and easy to style. Well, it is very short. Not Amber what’s-her-name, Kanye West’s-ex short, but short nonetheless. Anyway, my point is, it grows quickly, and when short hair grows out to the point where it no longer resembles its original style, it’s a complete nightmare. It just doesn’t sit right, its unflattering, and quite frankly, it’s unattractive.
In times like these when I haven’t had the time to make an appointment for a cut - even if I did, my favourite hairstylists are all en route from Paris at present - I have to find crafty yet fashion-savvy ways to conceal, or at least draw attention away from, my ever-present curly nape-y hairs, my boofy crown section and my sideburns-gone-south.
What’s the answer, you ask? Accessories, of course: hats, scarves, bows, clips, headbands, you name it. Such a blessing the Spring2010 Collections were all about such things, no? Runway aside, there’s a number women who have embraced headwear, and from whom you can take your cue. Think Lee Radziwell and Jacqui Kennedy, Patty Smith, Edie Sedgwick Little Edie, Bjork, Erica Badu, Lisa Bonnet, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, so on and so forth.
So go on, throw a hat on, wrap a scarf, or if all else fails, slick it down. Try a wet-look gel (such as American Crew’s Pomade) or a bit of grooming crème (such as Kiehls’ Silk Groom) – whatever works.
